What is baptism?
Baptism is a step of obedience to Christ where, as a follower of Jesus, you tell the world that you believe Jesus died for you and that He rose again. To illustrate your belief in Jesus, you step into the water. As you stand there, you are identifying with Jesus in His death - "He died for me." You are fully immersed under the water and brought back up - "He rose again for me." Baptism does not change anything about where you spend eternity, and it does not make you a Christian. It is simply an outward testimony of your inward belief in Jesus.
Who can be baptized?
Anyone who has become a follower of Jesus can be baptized. You become a follower of Jesus by simply believing in His death and resurrection. If you believe that you have sinned and that God's Son Jesus (who had no sin of His own) died on the cross to pay for your sins and that He rose again, you are a follower of Jesus.
Will being baptized save me or ensure that I go to Heaven?
Going through the act of baptism will have no bearing on where you spend eternity. What you believe about Jesus is the only issue that determines where you spend eternity. If you believe that Jesus is your only hope of Heaven and that He did everything necessary for you to be saved without any help from you or anyone else, then you believe the truth about Jesus. The instant a person believes in Jesus, their eternity in Heaven is sealed forever. If you reject Jesus as your only hope of Heaven, then you have rejected the truth about Jesus. Getting baptized will have no bearing on whether or not you go to heaven. The only thing that has any bearing on that is what you do with Jesus. When should I be baptized?
In keeping with the pattern we see in the Bible, you should be baptized as soon after believing in Jesus as possible (see Acts 2:41; 8:35-38; Acts 16:31-34).
